- In 1937 Willys Overland Motors Inc. introduced the Willys model 37 which evolved into the 1941 Americar
441. The model 37 featured an economical 4-cylinder engine, a wheelbase of 100 inches, a more streamlined body design than earlier
models, and a bullnose front hood.
- The 1938 model
was essentially the 1937 model.
- In 1939 the wheelbase was extended to 102 inches and there
were two front hood and fenders styles (¹Willys
and ¹Overland). The original head was redesigned to give a higher compression ratio. Horsepower was increased from 48 to 61BHP.
- The front hood and fenders were again remodeled in the
¹1940 model year.
- 1941 saw a change in wheelbase to 104 inches, a single grill and a slight increase in horsepower.
In the early sixties, drag racers realized that the
¹Willys 440 and
¹441 Americar with its short wheelbase, lightweight, and high center of gravity necessary for traction, would make the perfect car for the popular
¹Gas Coupe and Sedan
Class. Hundreds were ¹converted and
¹raced at every drag strip throughout Canada and the United States.
