Throughout the 60's and early 70's the 1940
- 41 Willys Coupe was raced by many of the top drivers of the period.
Names like KS Pittman, Jr. Thompson,
Bones Balough, Mike
Steinberg, Nunes and Murray, the Teixeira Brothers, Barbara
Hamilton, and Greer and Barber to list a few. By the mid 70's,
it was decided that the only thing fans wanted to see were Funnycars. The Gassers were consigned to history and
by that time the Willys Coupe and some of the drivers had achieved legend
status. The era is remembered by many of those old enough to have been there and dreamed of by those who weren't.

The other 2 out of 3 match races that stands out in my mind was the matches between Big John Mazmanian
and Stone Woods and Cook; I was in High School at that time and the anticipation would build up all
during the week, we would be placing bets during auto shop--that was how famous those matches were,
they would draw a good 10,000 people just to see those two cars. |
