Following
the application and buffing of the parting wax, a thin layer of
gel coat is applied to the mould in preparation for the matting
and polyester resin. A single layer of 1 ounce matting followed
by 4 layers of 1.5 ounce matting are hand laid and rolled onto
the moulds. Each layer is allowed to cure before laying in the
next layer of cloth. This eliminates problems related to heat
generation and warping. The resulting shell is made up of a
total of 7 ounces of matting and is 3/16 inches thick.
