Auto Works began making the plugs for its 1940 - 1941 Willys
Coupe in December 1999. Plug making is a time intensive process
which has a direct affect on the surface quality and the
accuracy of the finished car.
PAW makes male plugs by building a
rough sub-structure from wood or glass fibre and covering it
with multiple layers of a non shrinking type of body filler. The
final surface contours are determined through the use

of
templates derived from careful
measurements of steel cars. Photographs are also used as
references for the many details that are incorporated into the
design.
Once the plug contours are
complete the surface is sanded to a smooth finish. It is then
primed and prepared in the same manner as one would prepare a
car for painting. The finished plug is the base for the
production of female master moulds. |
